Sample Questions From Verbal Section

Sentence Completion

1. Nonviolent demonstrations often create such tensions that a community that has constantly refused to ------ its injustices is forced to correct them: the injustices can no longer be -------------

(A) acknowledge. .ignored
(B) decrease. .verified
(C) tolerate.. accepted
(D) address.. eliminated
(E) explain.. discussed

Ans: A.

Simplified Sentence:

As a result of nonviolent demonstrations a community that has refused to ------------its injustices is forced to correct them. They can no longer be ---------------

Clue Words:
'is forced to correct injustices'

Type of analogy:
Cause and effect

Option meanings:
(A) Acknowledge=admit -------Ignored= disregarded
(B) Decrease = reduce -------- Verified = confirmed
(C) Tolerate = bear --------------Accepted = approved
(D) Address = deal with---------- Eliminated = erased
(E) Explain = describe, clarify --- Discussed = Talked about

Explanation:
The clue words 'is forced to correct them' indicate that the correction is being done unwillingly. This means that the injustices can no longer be 'ignored' or 'accepted', the other three choices do not make sense. A community that has 'refused to tolerate injustices' will have nothing to correct, so we can also rule out option (C). Option (A) is therefore the correct one: the injustices can no longer be ignored, they will have to be acknowledged.

2. There are, as yet, no vegetation types or ecosystems whose study has been ---- to the extent that they no longer-----ecologists.

(A) perfected.. hinder
(B) exhausted.. interest
(C) prolonged. .require
(D) prevented. .challenge
(E) delayed. .benefit

Ans: E

Simplified Sentence:
The N.I.H. have decided that human genes can be used only to correct diseases for which --------------- treatments are unsatisfactory.

Clue Words:
'only'

Type of analogy:
Cause and effect

Option meanings:
(A) Similar = same
(B) Most = almost all
(C) Dangerous = not safe
(D) Uncommon = rare
(E) Alternative = different

Explanation:
We can straightaway rule out options (A),(C) and (D) because they are illogical. If 'similar' treatments were unsatisfactory there would be no point in trying gene therapy. Nobody would try out 'dangerous' treatment and very few would attempt 'uncommon' ones. It is clear from the question that gene therapy is to be used only as a last resort, after ALL the other treatments have been tried out.

So option (E) is the correct answer.

Reading Comprehension

The belief that art originates in intuitive rather than rational faculties was worked out historically and philosophically in the somewhat wearisome volumes of Benedetto Croce, who is usually considered the originator of a new aesthetic. Croce was, in fact, expressing a very old idea. Long before the Romantics stressed intuition and self-expression, the frenzy of inspiration was regarded as fundamental to art, but philosophers had always assumed it must be controlled by law and by the intellectual power of putting things into harmonious order. This general philosophic concept of art was supported by technical necessities. It was necessary to master certain laws and to use intellect in order to build Gothic cathedrals, or set up the stained glass windows of Chartres. When this bracing element of craftsmanship ceased to dominate artisits outlook, new technical elements had to be adopted to maintain the intellectual element in art. Such were linear perspective and anatomy.

i. The passage suggests that which of the following would most likely have occurred if linear perspective and anatomy had not come to influence artistic endeavor?

A).The craftsmanship that shaped Gothic architecture would have continued to dominate artists outlooks.

B).Some other technical elements would have been adopted to discipline artistic inspiration.

C).Intellectual control over artistic inspiration would not have influenced painting as it did architecture.

D).The role of intuitive inspiration would not have remained fundamental to theories of artistic creation.

E).The assumptions of aesthetic philosophers before Croce would have been invalidated.

Ans : B

Explanation:
The answer is (B). Since technical elements were necessary to support and discipline art, and different elements had prevailed till then, linear prospective and anatomy were just 2 new elements that dominated artist's out look. If not them, something else would have.

ii. The passage supplies information for answering which of the following questions.

A).Does Romantic art exhibit the triumph of intuition over intellect?

B).Did an emphasis on linear perspective and anatomy dominate romantic art?

C).Are the intellectual and intuitive faculties harmoniously balanced in post-Romantic art?

D).Are the effects of the rational control of artistic inspiration evident in the great works of pre-romantic eras?

E).Was the artistic craftsmanship displayed in Gothic cathedrals also an element in paintings of this period?

Ans : E

Explanation:
The paragraph talks bout preromantic art mainly, not romantic art ("long before the romantics--------") so we cannot answer A, B and C which are about other periods. It also does not talk about paintings at all, son we don't have information to answer (E) we can answer Q(D) easily from the paragraph.
