Graduate Education-Abroad
The United
States of America has a very strong and exciting education system that you
can make use of if you are interested. It differs in many ways from
our Indian system. Some of the differences are
-
There
they have a lot of interaction between the industry and the
university. So, what you get is very practical education
-
There is
a lot of flexibility in admission, curriculum and in the education
process. I have a Ph.D in the Materials science, a minor in the
Civil Engineering and have taken several courses in public policy
-
The
approach is more fundamental
As a result
if you
are an interested student, you will get highly rewarding,
and fun education in the US universities.
But beware,
even in the US, there are many bad universities and studying there will do
you no good.
In the olden days, most employees checked only whether the student had a
degree from the US or not. But, now the awareness has grown
significantly. The market has become a lot more competitive and
hence the job scene.
So,
just a US degree may not be of any use to you unless you get it from an
institute of good repute.
However, the number of good
universities in the US are far more than those in any
other country and hence they offer the student a wide range of exciting
options.
With this introduction, let us get down to our main task...
...Learn the best possible strategies to go to the US for higher

The
Convincing Act
In short,
you just need to do only two things
to get an admission and aid in a US university for
higher education...
That is it.
If you take care of these, the
rest is all a detail.
But, how do you do it?
Well, I am going to walk you through the process step by step in this
book. So, read it very
carefully and use what you learn.
So, welcome
aboard...
Aiming
to Succeed? Plan !!!
You should plan if
you want to succeed. It is the process by which you first work out what
you want to achieve, and then think through the what, when, where, and how
of achieving that goal.
In short, planning is essentially deciding what to do when.
Planning ensures you move towards your goal in an organized fashion,
without being distracted by unimportant (but urgent) tasks.
As a GRE taker, you should plan the date to take the exams, when to start
the preparation, when to apply and how to prepare the application package
and so on at least a year in advance.
You should take stock of the money you have!
With effective planning you can:
-
Use
minimum effort for maximum effect (i.e. you can be the forth in the
class, have the fifth best GRE scores and ordinary recommendations and
still end up with the best admissions)
-
Take
into account all factors, and focus on the critical ones
-
Become
aware of the implications of your course of action, and prepare for
eventualities.
-
Decide
on the course of action to initiate change
-
Gather
resources needed to achieve your goal
-
Complete
your tasks in the most efficient way
Remember if there is no plan,
80% of your efforts will achieve only 20% of the results aimed at.
Thinking and planning can reverse this to 20% efforts achieving 80% of the
results. You may even decide that it is more efficient not to attempt the
20% work at all!
