How to apply convincingly
There is a crucial difference between the way Indian
admission panels approach the admission process and that of American panels.
Indian panels generally look for completeness and performance. American
panels, in addition to these two aspects, also try to look at the over
all caliber/potential of the student.
They are keenly interested in your passion, ideas and your ability to
do self study. You must project all these in a convincing manner
in your application.
Before starting the procedure, identify your unique points (or) the strongest
reasons why the university you are applying to should give you an admission.
In my specific case, it was like this:
-
I had
a good academic record
(80+ percentage in the class and within the
top five)
-
My GRE
scores were pretty good
(2230 in GRE and 94% in the subject GRE)
-
I did
pretty well in the verbal section
(640/800 despite being from a Telugu
medium school) and
-
I had
a number of projects
(actually I pulled these off intelligently )
I had a few
negative points too. They were
-
I was
from REC Trichy which was no match to an IIT
-
I had
a very poor set of extra-curricular activities and
-
I did
not have any great guy recommending me
Now, within
these limitations, I had to impress my panel. I had a good record
but I needed to compete with the IITians.
I had 5 projects and am from a not very well known college. How
do I compete with some one who also has 5 projects and is from a very
reputed college?
This is very, I carved out a unique admission proposition for my case...
I decided to convince the panel that even under highly unequal situations,
I was able to do as well as a IIT student. He/she studied in a college
with much better facilities, faculty and funding than me. Still
we did equally because of my ability to do things on my own, work with
teams that I formed etc. So,
Give me equal opportunities and I will do a
lot better!
Yes, I built my resumes, my cover letter, my SOP,
my recommendation letters, my project reports revolving around this central
theme.
The central theme may vary from person to person. For some one it
may be exemplary scores in the GRE, AGRE and academics which indicate
their ability to perform well and learn well. For some one it may
be their college which is one of the best in the country showing that
they are already used to performing under highly competitive world class
environments.
Whatever your unique admission proposition is, build an application package
around it. Provide ample evidences and convince them and...
wait for the admissions and aid to clutter your desk!
99% of the students just don't get this right and hence don't get anything
right.
That is precisely why, I have built a completely unique system that helps
you handle all the three aspects of admission scientifically.
Here is how
our system makes you master all the three...
